You’re so Rock n’ Roll

That’s how it all started. Tom Jermann, as a young boy, had early design aspirations from visuals of record albums from his favorite bands, some of the most influential being KISS and the Beatles. What better place to follow his dream than Los Angeles? From his native homeland of Switzerland, he packed up to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He earned a BFA in Design and Packaging and started his path to his dream career in Music, landing his first job as a junior art director at MCA Records.

Around the same time, Toby Yoo was also following her calling in the East Coast. Drawing and painting from an early age, she knew art and design would be her pursuit. She attended Carnegie Mellon University and Parsons School of Design before continuing her education at Art Center College of Design and earning a BFA in Design and Packaging. Tom and Toby’s unlikely paths crossed at ACCD and they have been a team in work and life ever since.

In 1997, with some work experience under our belt, we took a chance and started t42design.

Initial projects came from our very first client, Universal Music. Our breakthrough, however, came from Roadrunner Records, after designing Slipknot’s debut album, followed by their multi-Platinum sophomore album IOWA. This initiated collaborations from Warner Bros. Records, Hollywood Records and other record companies. Another major milestone came in 2001, with a request to design KISS’ Box Set packaging. A childhood dream come true for Tom! This marked the beginning of an incredible 18 year relationship which has continued to this day. With over 50+ projects to date ranging from CD and DVD packages, tour programs, DVD motion menus, box sets, books and others.

Over the years, our design repertoire has grown extensively from a diverse clientele. From book designs for Chronicle Books to brochures and collateral for non-profit organizations, branding and signage for concert venues to websites for bands and businesses and numerous logos and trademarks. We are always ready for new challenges as we continue to pursue to our passion.
